23 Ways To Make Your Dreamforce Experience Awesome From Our CEO

November 3rd, 2017 • 4 min read

Here’s how to survive and thrive at Dreamforce ‘17 next week.

1. Wear comfortable shoes.

You’ll be walking 8 to 10 miles on concrete floors over 4 days. Trust me when I say that the cool looking (but uncomfortable) shoes may attract the wrong kind of attention when you’re hobbling by the end of the week.

2. Get out of your comfort zone.

Introduce yourself to people you might not normally talk to. Everyone is in an environment where learning naturally happens. Take advantage of that and learn from them as they learn. They feel just as overwhelmed as you do, and allowing them to teach you will help them feel more comfortable.

3. Take a photo of the session title slide.

This will help you keep track of all the sessions you went to and jog your memory later when you’re reviewing what you learned.

4. Don’t overbook yourself.

Don’t say yes to every party. Take at least one night to just hang out and stay in your hotel room.

5. Visit all the different areas.

While the majority of Dreamforce happens right in The Moscone Center, some of it is spread throughout San Francisco. Take time to stop by all the different areas. You might find something interesting that you didn’t expect.

6. Know how to get around.

Like I said, the event doesn’t just happen in one place, so make sure you know how to get from Point A to Point B. Check out the Dreamforce Campus Map before you arrive to familiarize yourself with the layout.

7. Go in with a gameplan that you know will only be 60-70% of what you’re going to do.

Leave yourself some spare time to add in other sessions or hang out with people you meet or just chill and reflect on all you’ve learned. You’ll thank yourself later for a little bit of down time.

8. Charge your phone whenever you can.

If you see an outlet use it. Or do yourself a solid and purchase a battery pack.

9. Don’t overpack your backpack.

No awards for being an over prepared Boy Scout here. Only take what you need.

10. Wear layers.

San Francisco can be hot and cold in the same day.

11. Stay hydrated.

And by hydrated, I don’t mean alcohol. Drink plenty of water.

12. Make a list of people you would like to meet and then try to find meetups that will introduce you to those people.

Don’t rely on chance to catch up with a valuable connection. Find out what meetups they might be interested in and make a point to go to them.

13. Take advantage of early check-in.

Avoid the crowds and long lines. Whoever said the early bird gets the worm was probably talking about Dreamforce.

14. Make sure you eat.

You won’t make it through the day without some sustenance. Check out the food trucks for a quick bite, or use some of that empty space in your backpack for a few protein bars.

15. Use the Starbucks app to order coffee.

Why wait for your coffee? The lines are long and you have places to be, people to meet.

16. Save stuff for swag on the way back.

You’re going to get lots of free stuff. Take it home to use it as brag swag for all your friends who couldn’t make it to Dreamforce this year.

17. Only attend a concert if you’re a fan of the band.

Because who wants to sit through an hour or two of music they don’t love?

18. Take time to take in what San Francisco has to offer, including the food and the scenery.

San Francisco is home to great eats and fabulous views. Take a few hours to experience what makes this city unique.

19. Celebrities are normal people too.

You might run into them. And it’s okay to ask for a quick selfie with them.

20. Ask about people’s backgrounds.

People in the Salesforce industry tend to have interesting stories about where they came from. You might learn something.

21. Wear compression socks.

You’re going to be on your feet a lot. Take care of them.

22. Use your water bottle and refill it often.

Bottled water can get expensive. Save the earth and refill your water bottle.

23. Don’t be afraid to change your schedule.

You might find out about an interesting session or meetup once you get there. Be flexible.
