Meet Penrod’s New Faces, And Find Out Who Most Inspires Them

October 17th, 2017 • 4 min read

Nick, Justin, Jon, and Gabe joined Penrod in September. They’ve all been awesome additions to our team, and we wanted to give you a chance to get to know them as well. We asked each of them who most inspires them and while their answers range from parents to tech icons to people they saw taking a stand, they all have someone truly remarkable that they look up to.

Who most inspires you?

First, my parents inspire me, since they both have amazing stories of where they came from and how they became two very well-respected doctors. They showed me by example that I could accomplish anything I put my mind to and I’ve been doing so ever since.

Second, Elon Musk is another person who inspires me because of his accomplishments with Tesla and SpaceX. Additionally, his acquisition of SolarCity in 2016 and the advancements with the HyperLoop means, to me, that he’s trying to bring the world into a more advanced technological age, which I’m also really passionate about. I really look forward to a time where we are all using technology for a happier, greener and more energy efficient life.

Who most inspires you?

I am very inspired by Malcolm Gladwell. I love how he finds counter-intuitive ways of looking at very big problems and then wraps them into interesting and relatable stories. You don’t need to have an advanced degree to engage and be inspired by his stories.

Who most inspires you?

I was in my early 20’s when I first met someone who was openly gay. Having grown up in a small city where such things would make you an outcast, being proud was a difficult stance to take. It would be another few years before I met someone who truly inspired me and this was a director at a homeless charity, Lee Buss. Not only was he openly gay, he was also an authentic role model for the company. He promoted the message that being authentic in the workplace was essential for employee wellbeing, and saw diversity in the workplace is an asset. He worked incredibly hard to ensure LGBT people were empowered to be themselves and that everyone felt safe to do so, leading by example. This was one of the best companies I ever worked for and I became an authentic role model for Stonewall in the hopes of continuing this message. Having moved to a country where LGBT rights are continually under attack, I believe people like Lee who fight for equality are to be valued and celebrated more than ever.

Who most inspires you?

I’ve always had a strange fascination with Steve Jobs, ever since he came back to Apple in the late 90’s and led the company’s resurgence. If ever I have a moment where I doubt the value in technical progress, I think about the feeling of contentedness I had when I first uploaded all of my music to my first iPod and was able to walk around with the entirety of my music collection with me. I think it’s Jobs’ vision that led to the kinds of products that Apple still makes, and in that vision you see values that I share as well: minimalism, intuitiveness, aesthetics, durability. Jobs cared so much about the end-to-end quality of a project that he had the signatures of all team members that made the original Macintosh printed on the inside of the case -- even though most people would never see them, nor knew they were there. I strive for that spirit of virtuous quality and hidden beauty wherever and whenever I can.
